Compound Fracture 5th Metatarsal
5th metatarsal most commonly fractured in adults.
Compound fracture 5th metatarsal. The base of the fifth metatarsal is divided into three fracture zones. A jones fracture can be either a stress fracture a tiny hairline break that occurs over time or an acute sudden break. Zone 1 fractures are avulsion or chip fractures that occur at the tip of the base of the fifth metatarsal. The fifth metatarsal bone lies at the base of the small toe and the jones fracture occurs in the midfoot area the top of the bone towards the ankle from the base of the small toe.
Metatarsal fractures are common in the pediatric population accounting for close to 60 of all pediatric foot fractures the highest rate of fracture in childhood involves the fifth metatarsal followed by the third metatarsal the lowest rate is the first metatarsal. There are three main types of metatarsal fractures. The joint between the bases of the fourth and fifth metatarsals is a key landmark for classifying proximal fifth metatarsal fractures. The fifth metatarsal bone is the most common metatarsal bone to be fractured in sudden acute injury to the foot.
Jones fractures are caused by overuse repetitive stress or trauma. These fractures typically are treated without surgery using a cast boot or hard soled shoe and tend to heal within 6 8 weeks. Fifth metatarsal fractures are breaks in the fifth metatarsal bone the bone that connects the little toe s proximal phalanx that is the phalanx closest to the ankle to the cuboid bone this bone can be susceptible to breaks particularly for very active people. The biomechanics of the fractures differ as do their natural history.
Stress fracture of the 5 th metatarsal. The proximal 5 th metatarsal is the site of a number of fractures and variants which mimic fractures. Zone 2 fractures are known as jones. The other metatarsal bones can also be broken.
3rd metatarsal fractures rarely occur in isolation 68 associated with fracture of 2nd or 4th metatarsal. 1st metatarsal most commonly fractured in children less than 4 years old. Normal apophysis of the proximal 5 th metatarsal. Stress fracture of the 5 th metatarsal is the least common fracture type of the proximal 5 th metatarsal with an avulsion fracture being the most common followed by jones fracture stress fractures typically occur within 1 5 cm of the metadiaphyseal junction slightly distal to the site of a jones fracture.
Avulsion fracture of the proximal 5 th metatarsal. Jones fractures avulsion fractures and spiral or oblique fractures. Peak incidence between 2nd and 5th decade of life. Tuberosity styloid fractures always occur proximal to this.
