Eagles syndrome. Eagle syndrome is a form of nerve pain that causes people to experience a dull throbbing ache around the face and throat. Eagle syndrome refers to symptomatic elongation of the styloid process or calcified stylohyoid ligament 1 2 it is often bilateral. Eagle syndrome is characterized by recurrent pain in the middle part of the throat oropharynx and face. Eagle syndrome also termed stylohyoid syndrome styloid syndrome styloid stylohyoid syndrome or styloid carotid artery syndrome is a rare condition commonly characterized but not limited to sudden sharp nerve like pain in the jaw bone and joint back of the throat and base of the tongue triggered by swallowing moving the jaw or turning the neck.
What is eagle syndrome. This pain comes from problems with either the styloid process or stylohyoid ligament. However the condition is sometimes associated with disorders causing heterotopic calcification such as abnormal calcium phosphorus metabolism and chronic renal failure. In most cases the cause is unknown.
